The Constraint Landscape

Help learners understand how constraints evolve during longer AI conversations, and why an exchange can improve, drift, or degrade over time. It builds on Context Engineering and prepares learners for more advanced collaboration patterns.

Purpose

Help learners understand how constraints evolve during longer AI conversations, and why an exchange can improve, drift, or degrade over time. It builds on Context Engineering and prepares learners for more advanced collaboration patterns.

Candidate Learning Outcomes

Learners may later practice how to:

  1. Notice when constraints have accumulated, disappeared, or begun to conflict.
  2. Identify hidden assumptions and conversational drift before they shape more work.
  3. Decide when to clarify, summarize, restart, or isolate a conversation.
  4. Explain why similar prompts can lead to different answers in different conversational contexts.

Core Ideas

  • Every conversation carries an evolving set of goals, corrections, examples, decisions, assumptions, and constraints.
  • More conversational history is not automatically better context.
  • Constraint conflicts and unexamined assumptions can change what a response appears to be answering.
  • Restarting is sometimes a way to restore a clear problem definition, not a failure of the learner or the tool.
  • Context windows are a technical factor in long conversations, but the durable learner model is that active context can be incomplete, crowded, or misaligned.

Relationship to Existing Material

This is a conceptual companion to Thinking in Constraints and a later foundation for Problem Definition and Human-AI Collaboration. It complements Escaping the Conversation Gravity Well: this module explains the landscape of evolving constraints, while that idea focuses on the practical choice to continue, summarize, branch, or restart.
