Facilitator guide: The Restaurant Test

Labs reference: Facilitator guide: The Restaurant Test.

Suggested session: 20–25 minutes: 4-minute setting frame, 8-minute scenario sorting, 7-minute safer-route work, and 6-minute debrief.

Preparation

Print or share the fictional scenario cards. Set up four response areas: Reasonable as stated, Possible after a safer rewrite, Use an approved route or human process, and Pause and verify. Keep all discussion fictional and voluntary.

Facilitation priorities

  • Start with familiar human settings before naming chatbot accounts or organizational tools.
  • Separate trust in a person or tool from privacy of the setting.
  • Ask what a safer rewrite would preserve, not only what it would remove.
  • Keep “approved organizational tool” conditional on actual organizational approval; do not turn the activity into a vendor-policy lesson.
  • Normalize uncertainty. A learner can choose Pause and verify when the appropriate account, consent, or policy is unknown.

Common difficulties

  • A learner labels a whole setting safe: ask what task, data, audience, and access conditions are changing.
  • A learner labels all chatbot use inappropriate: return to a low-risk, general task and compare it with a record-specific task.
  • A learner focuses only on names: ask about accumulated details, files, messages, and context that could identify someone.
  • The group debates an exact policy: record the question and return to the setting-and-boundary decision.

Evidence of learning

Look for a specific comparison between settings, a clear reason for the choice, and a safer route that retains an appropriate practical purpose.

Accessibility and inclusion

Provide cards in selectable text, read scenarios aloud on request, and allow silent sorting or written responses. Use named categories rather than color alone. Do not ask learners to reveal their accounts, work policies, or private experiences.

Provisional timing for facilitator planning

These inherited estimates are starting points for facilitation, not completion targets for learners. Refine them after observing setup, access needs, discussion, and actual participation.
