What you will make
This lab helps learners use any chatbot to identify possible AI opportunities in a grounded, human-centered way.
The goal is not to automate for the sake of automation.
The goal is to notice places where AI might expand capability, reduce friction, improve access, support learning, or help people participate more fully.

Step 1: Choose a Real Situation
Pick one everyday situation from work, school, volunteering, family life, or community life where people experience friction.
Examples:
- People struggle to understand a process.
- New employees need repeated explanations.
- Customers ask the same confusing questions.
- Important information is scattered across documents.
- People avoid a task because the first step is unclear.
- A form, policy, or instruction is hard to understand.
- A team has trouble turning discussion into next steps.
- Someone has expertise but struggles to explain it clearly.
Step 2: Ask the Chatbot to Explore the Situation
Use a prompt like:
Help me explore this situation as a possible AI opportunity. Do not start with automation. First, identify who is involved, where the friction is, what human need is not being met, and what would improve if the situation worked better.
Step 3: Look for Capability Expansion
Ask:
Where might AI expand human capability in this situation? Consider access, understanding, learning, creativity, translation, decision support, pattern recognition, documentation, and participation.
Step 4: Check for Risk and Responsibility
Ask:
What could go wrong if AI were used here carelessly? What information needs protection? What should a human still review or decide? Who could be harmed if the output is wrong?
Step 5: Name the Opportunity
Write one opportunity statement:
AI might help [person/group] by [capability improvement] so they can [human outcome], as long as we [responsibility/guardrail].
Example:
AI might help new employees understand internal procedures by turning scattered policy documents into guided explanations, so they can ask better questions and become confident faster, as long as a knowledgeable human reviews the content and sensitive information is protected.
Step 6: Share and Discuss
Discuss:
- Is this really an AI opportunity, or is it a process/design problem?
- What would need to change around the tool?
- What would success look like?
- What guardrails would be needed?
