Remember it this wayChatbot describes how you interact with the system—the conversation—not necessarily how the system works behind the screen.
In plain language
A chatbot is the conversational front door to a software system. You type or say something, and the system responds in the form of a conversation.
The experience may be powered by simple rules, generative AI, or a combination of tools and services, so the chat format alone does not tell you what is happening behind it.
Why it matters
A conversational style can make a system feel more knowledgeable, certain, or human than it is.
Different chatbots also have different features, settings, privacy behavior, and access to tools.
Example
A learner asks a chatbot to turn a fictional event notice into a checklist, then reviews the response for missing details and assumptions.
Common misconception
A chatbot is not necessarily an AI system, and a conversational reply is not proof that the system understands, remembers, or has checked what it says.
