Tents or a Grand Ballroom
A Back-of-the-Envelope Look at the Costs of State Dinners

Do We Need a Ballroom?
Although the idea of paving over the Rose Garden troubles me, this proposal deserves careful consideration. Such discussions typically begin with back-of-the-envelope calculations, which I had my newly upgraded GPT prepare.
I expected the numbers would reveal an obvious answer, but instead, they present compelling arguments both for and against the project. What do you think?
Current reality:
- Over the last decade, the U.S. has hosted ~1–2 state dinners a year (some years none, some years up to 4).
- Big-tent events on the White House grounds run ~$300k–$700k each (inflation-adjusted from documented costs).
- At that pace, taxpayers see ~$0.5M–$1.4M a year in state dinner hosting costs.
Proposed Grand Ballroom:
- Ballroom the size of two football fields (~115,200 sq ft), construction value ~$200M.
- Annual operating & ownership costs (excluding added security):
- Energy + maintenance + janitorial: ~$0.9M–$1.7M/year
- Long-term capital renewal (1.5–3% of construction value): ~$3M–$6M/year
- Total: ~$3.9M–$7.7M/year — regardless of usage.
Quick comparison (annual):
| Option | Events/Year | Cost/Event | Annual Total | Ongoing Cost to Taxpayers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tents | ~1–2 | $300k–$700k | $0.5M–$1.4M | Only when used |
| Grand Ballroom | Usage may vary | N/A | $3.9M–$7.7M | Every year, empty or not |
