From Map to Assessment

Source note for Friction Mapping -- Understanding Work Before Recommending Solutions: From Map to Assessment.

A friction map is not the final assessment. It is a source artifact that helps produce assessment-ready findings.

Outputs A Map May Feed

Friction mapping may feed:

  • intake findings
  • workflow inventory
  • friction inventory
  • risk register entries
  • opportunity backlog items
  • data readiness notes
  • training needs
  • recommendation boundaries
  • client-safe summary language

Why This Matters

Assessment work needs evidence, boundaries, and useful next steps.

The map helps the team connect observed workflow conditions to follow-up questions and possible recommendations without pretending every question is already answered.

Practical Standard

A useful friction map should help someone explain:

  • what process was studied
  • what the process produces
  • where friction appears
  • what evidence supports the friction point
  • what still needs validation
  • what should not be recommended yet
