Avoiding Premature Recommendations

Source note for Friction Mapping -- Understanding Work Before Recommending Solutions: Avoiding Premature Recommendations.

This module is not only about avoiding premature AI recommendations.

It is about avoiding premature recommendations of any kind.

Recommendations That May Come Too Soon

Learners should be careful with early recommendations for:

  • AI
  • automation
  • new tools
  • training
  • policies
  • process redesign
  • staffing changes

Discovery Discipline

A useful order is:

  1. Observe.
  2. Map.
  3. Name friction.
  4. Separate observations from hypotheses.
  5. Identify follow-up questions.
  6. Define recommendation boundaries.
  7. Recommend only when the process is understood well enough.

Why This Matters

Premature recommendations can solve the wrong problem, automate confusion, increase risk, or damage trust.

The phrase “do not recommend yet” is not a failure. It is often the most responsible finding.
