Facilitator guide: One Minute to Think, Forty-Five Seconds to Speak

Labs reference: Facilitator guide: One Minute to Think, Forty-Five Seconds to Speak.

Preparation and participation

Treat every time value as adjustable. Offer speaking, reading, text-to-speech for learner-authored words, written response, listening, timing, and observing roles. Adjust vocabulary, preparation time, speaking duration, notes, audience complexity, and room size.

Facilitation sequence

Set conditions; build opening/example/close map; make first attempt; learner reflects first; listener discloses evidence source; offer cue-grounded observations; learner chooses one change; repeat; compare.

Safety and accessibility

Timing is a practice constraint, not an accessibility gate. Do not stop a learner abruptly, require public speaking, or require recording. Transcript-only tools cannot assess delivery. Do not grade accent, personality, emotion, charisma, or perceived confidence.

Debrief and evidence of learning

Ask whether the listener could repeat the main idea and example, what change the learner selected, and what evidence supports the comparison. Seconds alone are not evidence of communication quality.

Timing and materials

Allow 25–40 minutes. Use topic cards, visible adjustable timer, preparation map, and optional notebooks.
