Current Event Retrieval Check

To be determined

The future exercise will ask learners to investigate one low-risk current event selected shortly before the session. Learners will compare an answer produced without confirmed retrieval with an answer grounded in an explicit search or facilitator-provided current source packet. They will then inspect what was retrieved, identify what the search missed or left uncertain, and validate the important claims against appropriate sources.

Status: Idea / Seed. This is not yet a learner-ready Draft package.

What you will make

The future exercise will ask learners to investigate one low-risk current event selected shortly before the session. Learners will compare an answer produced without confirmed retrieval with an answer grounded in an explicit search or facilitator-provided current source packet. They will then inspect what was retrieved, identify what the search missed or left uncertain, and validate the important claims against appropriate sources.

Candidate Activity Flow

  1. Mark which parts of the question depend on current information.
  2. Record whether the tool searched, browsed, or used only the context already present.
  3. Inspect the retrieved sources rather than relying on the chatbot’s summary of them.
  4. Check dates, relevance, authority, primary-source availability, and corroboration.
  5. Revise the search once if it answered the wrong or a neighboring question.
  6. Finish with a short claim ledger: supported, disputed, not found, or still uncertain.

What Needs to Be Designed Before Draft

  • a repeatable process for selecting and freezing a current event and source packet near the session date;
  • one example where the first search does not find the intended information;
  • an accessible, printed no-tool path using the same evidence;
  • a product-neutral way to record whether retrieval occurred;
  • boundaries that keep beginner practice away from active crises and consequential personal decisions; and
  • a facilitator checklist for refreshing links, dates, and claims before every run.

The lab should teach a durable habit: current context must be brought in, and retrieved context must still be checked.
