The Same AI Request Can Become Five Different Tasks

Labs reference: The Same AI Request Can Become Five Different Tasks.

Ask a chatbot the same question with different surrounding material and you may feel as though you asked five different tools.

That is not magic, and it is not proof that the system understands your situation the way a colleague does. A chatbot continues from the text around a request. The audience, format, examples, and distractions you supply all shape what becomes prominent next.

Try a simple comparison. Keep one request fixed: “Recommend a way to introduce the RS AI Learning Lab.” First, provide almost nothing else. The answer may be friendly and generic. Then name a small-business owner with little time. A short, practical experiment may move to the foreground. Name a governance team instead, and the same request can turn into a pilot with boundaries and review points.

Then add a piece of irrelevant fictional detail. A creative answer may suddenly become less useful because the tool is faithfully continuing something that does not belong in the task. Finally, add a tight instruction such as “one slide, no jargon, 35 words.” The result may be memorable—but it may have no room for a real audience need or a next step.

The comparison teaches a useful discipline: do not ask only whether more context improved an answer. Ask what it made less possible. Relevant context can help. Decorative context can distort. Excessive constraints can hide the choices a person still needs to make.

You do not need access to a particular tool to learn this. A printed set of sample responses works. The important part is the table: what changed in content, tone, format, assumptions, and recommendation? Which condition had the largest visible effect? What did the answer leave out?

One run cannot reveal a model’s hidden reasoning or establish a universal rule. It can reveal something more practical: the material around a request is part of the request. Treat it as something you design, inspect, and repair.

Draft for review. Examples are illustrative; tool behavior varies by model, settings, and time.
