My Safety Page for Exploring Ideas With AI

A personal practice for curiosity, evidence, and a second perspective

[AI, Governance, Risk]

I began using chatbots expecting something closer to search. Instead, I found a conversational tool that could keep an idea moving long after I should have stopped to ask whether the idea was any good.

That is not a claim that AI causes a particular mental state. It is a personal observation about the feeling of an easy conversation: when a tool is responsive and agreeable, it can be tempting to mistake momentum for evidence. I needed a small safety page for myself.

The Page I Keep Nearby

  • Name the claim. Write one sentence saying what I think I have found.
  • Find the source. Ask what evidence would support or weaken it, then inspect material outside the chat.
  • Invite friction. Ask for alternative explanations, missing context, and reasons the idea might fail.
  • Change the setting. Start a fresh chat or take a break before returning to an idea that feels unusually important.
  • Bring in a person. Share consequential ideas with someone who can question the assumptions rather than simply extend the conversation.

These are not clinical safeguards and they are not a substitute for professional support when it is needed. They are ordinary practices for keeping exploratory work connected to the world.

The Value of a Reset

A fresh conversation does not prove that a conclusion is sound. It can make it easier to see which assumptions I supplied and which claims still need checking. Writing a short note has a similar effect: it turns a flowing exchange into something another person can inspect.

The goal is not to make every session cautious or joyless. Exploration is part of how we learn. The point is to give curiosity a few places to pause, especially before an idea becomes a decision, a public claim, or a long private loop.

Make the Good Ideas Testable

AI can help frame a question, generate options, and organize a messy beginning. It cannot supply the independent witness, lived context, or accountable judgment that makes an idea ready to carry further.

My safety page is therefore not a warning label on curiosity. It is a way to protect it: keep the spark, add evidence, and let another person see the work.
